There have been different times in my career where I found that a change in language often evokes a change in thinking. As often the words that we use speak to how we look at our work and each other
So…
- “Control” became “Manage”
- “Customer Management” became “Customer Engagement”
- “Lead” became “Direct” and “Inspire”
- “Training” became “Learning”
- “No, but” became “Yes, and”
….you get the point.
Funny that I am using the word change, as I’m about to change “change” to “transform”. I probably already have been thinking like this because I present one of my change projects as managing the business response to industry changes…
Which leads me to new definitions I learned this week, when someone quoted William Bridges. Change is an event or situation that happens external to ourselves. Transition is what we do in response to change to get to a new beginning or new state. Transition is internal and within our power to shape.
I like to give it the even more powerful word Transform.
