I’m of the belief that all companies these days are Tech companies in one way or another. The lines have blurred.
Most companies use technology so heavily to do their everyday business that they are becoming technology companies. Consider the banks – could they really offer banking without technology?
Adding to the confusion is that there are now also organizations who’s business is so interwoven with their application that they consider their industry to be technology. These are businesses that exist within, because of, and for their app. Often they call themselves Tech companies rather than in the domain of the service within their app. Consider Uber – should it be considered a taxi company instead of Tech?
So what’s the point?
I think there is a lot about the running of a technology company that traditional companies can benefit from that is beyond just the use of tech.
Companies can also adopt the cultures these tech have developed over the past 30-40 years as well.
Things like:
- Customer-centricity
- Continuous innovation, discovery and prototyping
- Collaboration and partnership – inside and out
- Treating people as assets and developing them
- A flat clannish hierarchy
- Shared values and diversity of experience – or at least an awareness when it is lacking.
Besides, this is what Millennials look for in the workplace as well.
