It should have been Wimbledon Championship weekend this weekend. Except that, like a lot of sports events these days, it’s not happening. It’s been cancelled.
They are showing past glorious matches on demand on the website, in what they are framing as the Greatest Championship.
Today the AELTC announced that they are taking the ~10 million pound prize purse and distributing it among the should-have-been-there qualifiers for the tournament. And in case you aren’t a fan like me… AELTC is the All England Lawn Tennis Club, the actual name of the club. Wimbledon is the name of the location, the town and village.
Interesting response.
In some ways you could call the annual tournament a two sided market. The Fans and the Players. It seems with these two unique gestures, they are acknowledging and providing for both.
Hmmm.
Makes you reflect on whether there is an overlooked segment you might not be servicing right now. On reflection, do your different customers, employees and partners need a unique response?
I am a big fan of the tournament. One of my bucket list items is to one day pay the small fortune to sit in center court. Something about the tradition and excitement. My favourite If-poem stanza over the entrance to center court. “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster, and treat those two importers just the same”. I love how Federer embodies that, treating his team to a celebration final dinner no matter at what point he exits the tournament.
Sounds like the AELTC is living that value this year. Helped by a great insurance policy. But then maybe having that policy is also part of how they roll.
Another hmmm.
