We get muddled at times over actions and outcomes. It can happen because often both are activities and we get caught up in cause and effect. We want to focus on the outcome. When our focus is better spent on the actions we take that provide the outcomes they enable.
Remember that teams are made up of individuals
It’s important to understand how your team works individually and as a whole. Being a person with a core value of fairness, it was a surprise to me when I learned that being fair meant that you don’t treat everyone on a team the same way. To get the best performance from individual team members, you have to understand how they function independently as well as in the team.
Explain – Direct – Honour – Connect. For me, these are things that great business team leaders do
This morning I flicked on CNN over breakfast I heard political advisor John Avlon say that Trump too often uses as strategies behaviours that Distract, Deflect or Discredit. Anchor John Berman added to this list – Divide. For me, business leadership is best served donig the opposite – Explain, Direct, Honour and Connect.
Why I prefer turning points over breakthroughs
The invention of the printing press in the 1600s and the internet in our times were both turning points in history where the written word became more accessible to wider audiences. They weren’t time in place breakthroughs. They had a cascading impact. This is why I prefer to create turning points over breakthroughs.
Is your company culture live or words posted on a wall?
In honesty, even though they might not want to admit it, there are often gaps in organizations between best intentions and execution. So how do companies make sure that the actual day-to-day culture aligns with it’s values. How do they fill any recognizable gaps.
Be careful what you measure….
Using a data-driven approach is key to achieving our business objectives. We just need to take the time to make sure we understand our goals and what metrics can help drive them. There are plenty of real world examples where the objectives haven’t been achieved while side effect outcomes are experienced. So we have to make sure our data-driven approach is robust. It will help us to move in the right direction.
